At Solo, we take pride in highlighting the remarkable individuals who form our vibrant gig worker and content creator community. Our “Friends of Solo” series celebrates the unique journeys of those who seamlessly juggle gig work, personal goals, and creative passions, while inspiring others along the way.
This week, we’re thrilled to feature Bri from Ride Along With Bri, a gig worker and Youtuber with a passion for creating engaging content and sharing insights from her journey with her community.
From Challenges to Opportunities: Bri’s Start in the Gig Economy
Bri began her gig work journey through an avenue that likely feels familiar to many others: she was looking to offset her expenses and make more income.
“My husband and I had a downfall in our business and needed a way to make extra money on our own time while remaining self employed. After doing some research I came across the gig apps and realized this was exactly what we were looking for,” Bri mentions.
Bri’s Advice for Gig Workers? Test Out Different Apps!
For those just starting out in the gig economy, Bri has some great advice. “I would suggest signing up for multiple gig apps like DoorDash, Uber Eats, Grubhub, Spark Driver, and Instacart, as you may be put on a waiting list for many of these apps,” she tells us.
“A few of these apps may be busier in your city than other apps, so it's always a great idea to test out different apps in your city so that you're always maximizing your earnings”.
Solo can help gig workers do just that–maximize their earnings by getting realtime information and data about how much they can expect to earn during a shift working a specific app. Download Solo and start your free trial today to see why Solo is one of the best gig work management apps for drivers!
“Another tip I would give is to learn how to multi-app the correct way. For example, if you have your DoorDash app turned on and your Uber Eats app turned on and you get a reasonable offer from Uber Eats you would accept this offer and then pause your DoorDash app until the Uber Eats order is dropped off. Once the order is dropped off you can turn DoorDash back on and see which app brings in the best offer.”
Maintaining Work-Life Balance
For Bri, maintaining a work-life balance while juggling gig work and content creation is all about making time for the fun stuff. “I know how important work-life balance is, so I always try to make sure to set time aside to do something fun that's not work related, whether it's going for a bike ride or planning a getaway out of town.”
It’s important to practice self-care habits as a gig worker (and in general!) so that you can prevent burn out and continue maximizing your income streams.
An Unexpected Launch Into Content Creation
Bri’s journey into content creation began unexpectedly, as it wasn’t originally her idea. One day, her husband encouraged her to take a camera out and capture her experiences, curious to see what she might discover.
That simple suggestion sparked something within her, and from that moment on, she began regularly uploading videos to YouTube, documenting her gig work and sharing valuable insights with her audience!
Now, her channel (Ride Along with Bri) is reaching new milestones every single day and her content continues to reach thousands of viewers each week.
Memorable Moments on the Road: Meeting Followers in Real Life
One of Bri’s most memorable moments as a gig worker came when she realized just how far her content had reached.
While delivering an Uber Eats order from Red Robin, she arrived at the customer’s house expecting a routine drop-off. The instructions said, "leave at door," but as she was getting the hot bag out of her car, the customer came out to greet her. To her surprise, they mentioned that they watch her YouTube channel.
"It was pretty cool delivering to someone who had watched my channel," Bri recalls, highlighting the impact her content has had on her community.
Why Solo is a Game Changer for Bri
Bri loves the Solo app, particularly for its Automatic Mileage Tracking feature. Solo’s tax tracking features have also been a big help for her (and thousands of other gig workers!), giving her peace of mind as she manages multiple apps and income streams.
“Another feature that is really great is that Solo will estimate your State and Federal taxes. This is great because it helps you know how much to set aside for taxes,” Bri shares.
Bri also mentions that, “Solo is always running in the background when I go out and deliver that way I know everything is being tracked in one place.”
A Fun Fact About Bri
Bri uses a ton of unique, fun ways to keep her in the zone and to stay motivated. “I have a playlist on my phone called the "Grind Mix" to get me in grind mode!”
She also emphasizes the importance of setting goals and tracking your progress toward that goal.
As a gig worker, this can be challenging at times if you experience burn out but apps like Solo can help you stay on track and motivated through features like the Leaderboard, the earnings predictions, and more!
Bri’s Must-Have Gear and Tech
When it comes to gig work, Bri’s top piece of gear is a high powered flashlight!
“My piece of gear that's a must have when delivering at night is my mini high powered flashlight. This little flashlight has saved me so many times, especially when a customer forgets to leave their light on,” Bri shares.
